Fanorona is one of the games of the Alquerque family, which have been played in Egypt and the Middle East for over 3000 years. This game probably originated in Madagascar in the 17th century. It is still traditionally played in Madagascar, where it is pronounced "fanurn". Fanorona fascinates with a striking technique that seems unusual to us Central Europeans. Instead of skipping the stone to be hit, the direction of the move indicates which stone or row of stones is to be hit. The aim is to capture all the opponent's stones. In Fanorona, entire rows of stones can be captured. Each of the two players has 24 pieces at the start. You are still a little "generous" with your own pieces. Conveniently, Alquerque can also be played on this board (the instructions are of course included).
Our board games are burnt onto leather, so they last a long time. And the game almost packs itself for transport. All you have to do is press the game down slightly with one finger in the centre of the playing field, pull on the string and the game has already packed itself. It should stay that way for transport. So all you have to do now is push the bead up to the bag that has just formed and the game is packed ready for travelling. The games can be used in this way on hikes, on bike tours, in the car or even on long flights. The games are packed so small that the pocket of a jacket is sufficient to take this pleasant form of entertainment with you.
