Fanorona

Fanorona is one of the games of the Alquerque family, which have been played in Egypt and the Middle East for over 3000 years. This game probably originated in Madagascar in the 17th century. It is still traditionally played in Madagascar, where it is pronounced "fanurn". Conveniently, Alquerque can also be played on this board. (The instructions are of course included.) Fanorona fascinates with a striking technique that seems unusual for us Central Europeans. The aim is to capture all your opponent's pieces.

Queah

Queah is a simple strategy game for two players from Liberia. It is specific to a single indigenous tribe, the Queah tribe. A proper name for the game has not been handed down, which is why we simply call it by the tribe's name. As you can only move or jump diagonally in this game, it is not easy to knock your pieces away from your opponent. This is made even more difficult by the number of pieces each player has.

Dai Hasami Shogi / Go

Another board that contains 2 games: in Dai Hasami Shogi, both opponents want to capture the other's pieces. The pieces are removed from the board one piece at a time by using them strategically. Dai Hasami Shogi is a Japanese board game that is played on a regular chessboard (chess = Japanese shogi). The game of chess apparently came to Japan in the 8th century, since when it has developed significantly and only resembles the chess commonly played in Europe today in some respects. The smaller version of Go can also be played on this board. As the playing field only has 9 x 9 squares, the game is not played with 361 but only with 81 stones. In Go, you use your own stones to demarcate areas in order to conquer them and also capture your opponent's stones.

Barbacan

The name Barbacan comes from the old Spanish, which means fortress or fort. It is clear from the game that it is a siege game. According to ancient sources, it originates from the Moors. The playing field is not just an ornament, but also a carefully thought-out fortress system. The special feature of the game is that - unlike other siege games - there are no defenders. Each of the players is an attacker and endeavours to penetrate the fortress and prevent the opposing attackers from doing so at the same time. Observation, tactics and fighting skills are key in this game, which is not only characterised by its unusual visuals. A lot of strategy is also required here, as the aim is to conquer a fortress and place your own pieces so skilfully that you block your opponent(s). The number of pieces used varies depending on the number of players. The game material includes: 12 + 12 + 8 + 6 + 5 + 4 pieces.

This beautiful, entertaining pentalpha game for one person actually belongs in the category of patience games. Some sources assume that the origins of the game can be found in ancient Egypt. A pentagram was discovered on the roof of the temple of Sethos I in West Thebes Kurna, along with several other playing fields. However, it is not known how it was played at the time (around 1400 BC). The game became popular at the time of Socrates. The game is still played on Crete today.
